Our top tips for cycling in heat

When you go on a cycle holiday, you generally choose to go somewhere warmer and hotter than you left. Nothing beats riding in shorts and jersey! However, the change to hot weather can cause its own issues. Below are our top tips to keep yourself cool and keep the pedals turning in hot weather especially while you are away on your cycle holiday:

1. Stay hydrated - Drink lots of water and electrolyte mix before you get on the bike, whilst you are on the bike and after! Exercise performance is impaired when you are dehydrated by as little as 2% of your body weight.

2. Take the water on board steadily, rather than in big gulps.

3. Wear appropriate clothes! Base layers are generally still recommended as they whip the sweat away quickly but wear a lightweight jersey with it.

4. Apply suncream. Waterproof sweat resistant stuff is the best. We love anything designed for kids as although thick, is generally apply once and forget about it.

5. Don't expect PB's. Your heart rate is likely to be 5-10 beats higher a minute just to keep you cool, so don't expect your performance to necessarily be what it usually is.

6. If you have to stop, stop in the shade (or a cafe!)

7. Try to get your rides done early or late to avoid the heat of the day.

8. Pack some money for an ice-cream (- I'm not sure this is a true tip - Ed)

9. Remember to eat. Your appetite it suppressed in hot weather so the 'bonk' can creep up on you

10. Don't forget your sunglasses! Not only do you look cool, but they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

11. Use insect repellent. A prevalence of bugs, mosquitoes and wasps can be annoying at best, and painful at worst!

The good news is that your body acclimatises, so book more than one cycle holiday 😊. Happy Riding!
