Climb Mount Ventoux

Fine wine, fabulous food and an excellent array of cycling routes to explore, Provence in the South of France offers the chance to enjoy the famous French cuisine and culture whilst also conquering the monument standing above this beautiful region, Mount Ventoux.

Cycling through Provence is a great way to see the limestone gorges, lavender fields and vineyards. Combine this with the opportunity to knock off another cycling milestone and reach the peak of Mont Ventoux and it makes for a great short escape.

A delightful old walled town, surrounded by lavender fields and perched upon a small hill, Sault is ideally located both to ride Ventoux, and to discover the countryside around Provence. Many people use Sault as the town to stay in if trying to complete the arduous challenge of riding Mont Ventoux 3+ times in a day and entering the legendary club des cinglés du mont-ventoux.

Sat at the base of the mighty Ventoux, this is the perfect town to base yourself if you are attempting to climb Ventoux using the traditional Tour de France route. With two local bike shops nearby and a host of bars and restaurants that know what cyclists are looking for, you will feel well looked after when in Bedoin.

Bike highlights

Route highlight

Ventoux is the obvious highlight of the area, and there are three different routes up the mountain. However, Bikecation's favourite ride in the area, is the Gorges de la Nesque. A brilliant ride up from Bedoin to Sault, through a beautiful Gorge.

Bike difficulty

Difficulty level

Provence’s narrow old roads, clinging to the gorges are made for cycling. It is hilly however, and there is no such thing as a flat day. Mount Ventoux is tough and classed as a HC climb in the Tour de France.

Bike best times

Best time to go

You can ride in Provence anytime May to October. Our top tip is to go to the area for a few days, and to climb Ventoux on the least windy day of your stay. The winds on top of Ventoux can be notoriously strong!
