Cycling in Lake Como

The picturesque lakeside promenades, villas and gardens of Lake Como combined with the dramatic backdrop of the Italian Alps makes Lake Como the perfect setting for a memorable cycling holiday.

Lake Como is renowned for its atmospheric sense of calm. It’s home to a collection of small towns and village, whose surrounding hills offer lovely walks and even lovelier views. Switzerland is only around the corner, too, so you can even cross the border for the day.

Lake Como

To best enjoy the riding in Lake Como which features such memorable and historic climbs as Madonna del Ghisallo and Muro di Sormano you can stay in either the picturesque town of Ballagio or bustling Como to the south.

Bellagio is one of the most stunning lakeside towns not only in Lake Como, but in Europe. It’s known for its breath-taking villas, pretty cobbled streets and stupendous views from its southern-peninsula positioning on the water.

One of the most important towns on the lake, with a long history, lively streets and a busy waterfront Como is a bustling city that provides all sorts of amenities you may be looking for, from museums to fine dining restaurants, Como provides the lot.

Bike highlights

Route highlight

The Muro di Sormano which as of 2006 re-opened to cyclists is one of the toughest cycling tests imaginable. The fully resurfaced two km climb, completely free of motorized traffic is an unimaginable gradient, over 25% in sections and its average of 17%.

Bike difficulty

Difficulty level

The terrain around the Lake is fairly flat but these roads are much busier than going into the hills that make up the dramatic backdrop of the Lake. The climbs in the area are not mountain length but include those that are very sharp in gradient such as the the Muro di Sormano.

Bike best times

Best time to go

Lake Como can be visited most of the year, with a recommendation being Spring as to avoid the peak season summer rush of visitors that consumes the lake each year.
