Cycling in Northern Spain

The cycling paradise of Asturias in Northern Spain offers a huge amount of variety, from the beautiful coastline looking out over the Atlantic to the stunning mountains it offers everything a road cyclist would want from their holiday. 


With its combination of beaches, mountain ranges and natural parks, Asturias is the place to go if you can't decide between a holiday in the mountains or one at the beach. 



Between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay is the town and capital of Asturias, Oviedo. It’s proximity to some of the best cycling routes in the region makes it ideal for a cycling holiday and it is now easy to get to with Easyjet flying to the town on most days throughout the week.

Easyjet now fly to Oviedo. Bilbao is another option with a 2h 30 minute transfer.

Asturias is home to some of the most famous climbs in Spain. The iconic Vuelta a España climbs of Los Lagos de Covadonga and L’Angliru are a must if riding in the region but you also have a whole selection of other routes to explore in the region

The mountains in Asturias are some of the hardest in Spain and Europe, with the steep gradients make sure you are prepared and your bike has the right gear ratio. There are easier options on the coastline for those wanting to avoid the steep gradients of the mountains

Compared to other parts of Spain, Asturias can be wetter and colder for most of the year but with the lower overall heights of the climbs, these can be attempted earlier then many mountain ranges in Europe. Visit Asturias between April and October or for more sun, July and August
