Costa Dorada

Cycling in the Costa Dorada | Cambrils

The Costa Dorada, South Catalonia, is one of the most beautiful areas on the Spanish coast and one of the main tourist destinations on the Mediterranean. You can think of it as a little piece of Mallorca on the Spanish mainland, equally good for cycling, but quieter and much less well known in the cycling world. Here at Bikecation we rate it one of the best places to ride in Spain, and we are obviously not alone with Team Wiggins and Giant Alpecin also regularly frequenting the area.

Costa Dorada

Riding in the Costa Dorada involves leaving the ocean behind and heading up in to the beautiful mountains. they are not super high, being only 1200m above sea level at the highest point, but they can really test your legs. Cambrils is a quiet resort town on the coast; from here you can escape up to the mountains easily. It has two great bike shops which hire high quality carbon road bikes and is our favoured town on the Costa Dorada.

In July and August Salou is a thriving bucket and spade holiday resort with all the amenities you would expect. Outside of this time, it is much quieter and is an ideal resort if you are looking for a more lively experience. A short 8km ride along the coast takes you to the foothills of the mountains.

Montbrio is a tiny village with it's own naturally occuring thermal spa's. Ideal if you want absolute peace and tranquility.

Cycling in the Costa Dorada can vary between rolling coastal roads to big days of climbing in the mountains. This means you really can ride as much, or as little as you like, at a pace that suits you. Bike best times

Best time to go

Go between February and November, but avoid the crowds in July and August. With only 30 days of rain a year, on average, you will be very unlucky to get wet weather while you are there.
