With mountains and moorland, standing stones and castles, lively waterfalls and vibrant communities, the Brecon Beacons National Park has a tremendous amount to offer to its visitors and especially its cyclists.

Brecon Beacons

With its long and colourful history and a rich and varied mythology and culture, the Brecon Beacons is a special place to visit. The towns to the east of the National Park offer a great place to base yourself for some of the best riding that can be done in not only Wales but the UK.

Crickhowell is a small market town in the Brecon Beacons National Park and has a host of independent shops and restaurants as well as plenty of places to stay. The town dates back to an original settlement that would have been in its place in the Iron-age when settlers built a fort on the top of Table Mountain, Crug Hywel.

The main climb of the area is the Tumble and it is one of the most notorious cycling climbs in South Wales. At 6km in length and with a 10% gradient it’s all about slow and steady to summit the Blorenge. The Tumble has featured in professional race, the Tour of Britain

Difficulty level

The riding in south Wales is fairly challenging and offers a host of different demands to contend with when cycling. Most of the climbs in the area are steep and the descents tricky but with this comes an enormous sense of achievement at the end of the day

Bike best times
