Cycling Holidays in Northern Portugal

Our cycling holiday in northern Portugal takes you through this beautiful region, visiting numerous manor houses, palaces and monasteries on the way. These spectacular palaces were once upon a time owned by the clergy and the Royalty of Portugal and are now converted into beautiful lodgings known as ‘pousadas’.

The tour covering these charming pousadas in the north of Portugal begins in Valença do Minho, an ancient village in northern Portugal near the Spanish border. Here you will find a fortress with two towers and double walls, numerous manor houses, small pretty palaces and a few churches. We will then journey to Ciana do Castlo, a town dating back to the 13th century, and home to a very famous port. We’ll follow the river Lima to Ponte de Lima, enjoying the breathtaking view and vibrant vegetation. Ponte de Lima is a wonderful town and the name comes from the bridge (ponte) which was the only safe way to cross the River Lima. We’ll carry on through the stunning hills in Gerês, staying in a magnificent 12th century monastery converted into a hotel overnight.

We will then ride to the nature inspired hotel situated in the centre of Peneda/Gerês National Park, with spectacular views over the river and the Caniçada dam.

Our final day takes us to Guimarães, which is commonly known as the birthplace of the Portuguese nation. Here, take the chance to visit the medieval historical centre, the fabulous castle and the nearby palace, absorbing the medieval and traditional atmosphere around you.

On the last night we will stay in a convent dated back to the 12th century. This unforgettable holiday is not to be missed! Come and discover the secrets of Northern Portugal on this superb cycling tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Valenca

Arrive at Oporto airport. There will then be a 1hr drive to Valença and a short briefing about the tour. Tonight, you will stay in a pousada which is situated in the old fortified area of Valença, with a fantastic view to the Spanish border. You will have time to prepare for your leisure cycling trip in Portugal, and look forward to exploring what Northern Portugal has to offer.

Day 2: Valenca - Santa Luzia (62 km / 38 miles)

This morning we depart Valença and cycle towards Viana do Castlo, a city dating back to the 13th century. It was once one of the main ports of sailing during the Portuguese Discovery Journeys in the 16th century. Tonight, we stay in a pousada located on a hill in Santa Luzia, overlooking the city and the magnificent Lima estuary.

Day 3: Santa Luzia - Ponte de Lima (32 km / 20 miles)

We start today by cycling towards Ponte de Lima, the oldest small town in Portugal. Here you can find a wonderful bridge which was the only safe way to cross the River Lima until the end of the Middle Ages. This evening we’ll stay in a new, modern 4* hotel.

Day 4: Ponte de Lima - Gerês Hills (51 km / 32 miles)

After breakfast, we ride through the wonderful Gerês Hills, enjoying the stunning scenery. Our lodging tonight is in a pousada that, in the 12th century, was a Cistercian monastery.

Day 5: Gerês Hills - Peneda/Gerês (18 km / 11 miles)

This morning we leave the fabulous 12th century monastery and cycle up the Gerês Hills. Today’s journey is short but very steep, however it has the most magnificent views, which makes the hard climb well worth it. We’ll then reach our next pousada, set in the heart of Peneda/Gerês National Park.

Day 6: Peneda/Gerês - Guimarães (37 km / 22 miles)

After breakfast, we’ll ride towards Guimarães, which is said to be where the Portuguese nationality was born. We depart the Peneda Gerês National Park and journey towards the historic city. We’ll have the chance to visit the medieval historical centre, castle and the palace. Tonight, we stay in a beautiful pousada which was originally an Augustine monastery dating back to the 12th century.
