Long Ducker Bike Ride - Sunday 15th September 2019 - 186km (115 miles)/100km (62 miles)

Take on the challenge and cycle 62 miles from Harrow School to Highclere or 115 miles from Harrow School to the Shaftesbury Estate.

This fully guided and supported day ride starts at Harrow School and finishes in either Highclere or Dorset dependant on the route you choose. We try to stick to quiet roads as we ride through the Chiltern Hills AONB, North Wessex Downs AONB and Cranbourne Chase AONB.

All money raised will go towards this year's Long Ducker campaign and the work of the Shaftesbury Enterprise (please see details below).

This event is for any OHs, friends, family and parents who want to take part. Rugby legend and former Head of Sport at Harrow, Roger Uttley, has agreed to be the road captain for the day to celebrate his 70th birthday!

Spear Harrow (50% of funds)

Spear is an interactive, award-winning year-long programme that equips and supports disadvantaged 16 to 24-year olds not in education, employment or training to find long-term employment. Over the past year, Spear Harrow has enrolled 76 young people onto their intensive life-changing coaching programmes. An ever-increasing number of enrolling trainees disclose mental health issues and learning difficulties. Despite these challenges, an impressive 78% of last year’s Spear programme completers got into work/education and remain there a year later.

Harrow Club (25% of money raised)

In the spring of 1883 the Head Master, Dr Butler, wrote to all Old Harrovians informing them of the decision to start a School Mission in Latimer Road in Notting Dale. The Mission has evolved into the Harrow Club, a youth club serving young people in North Kensington. The huge diversity and need in this area have been highlighted by the disaster at the Grenfell Tower in June 2017. Harrow Club is situated just a few streets away and has been at the forefront of the response.
Throughout its history the successful evolution of the Harrow Club has relied on Old Harrovians for support, perhaps there has never been more need than now as the Club works to support a community recovering from disaster.

Shaftesbury Enterprise Projects (25% of money raised)

Funds will also be distributed to many organisations and local partners with which many Harrovians engage. Schools for children with severe learning difficulties (both primary and secondary) are supported along with other local primary schools. This money has a significant impact on local organisations and is targeted for where the need is greatest – all groups are local to Harrow and are on a scale where the money raised will have a significant impact.

The Shaftesbury Enterprise

Shaftesbury Enterprise encompasses all of Harrow’s philanthropic, charitable, outreach and partnership work. Through this initiative, boys engage purposefully and genuinely with the local community, in the spirit of the 19th-century reformer, philanthropist and Old Harrovian, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. This year, for example, over 80 boys have helped in Primary Schools with the reading programme.
