Annecy Cycling Routes

Annecy is a great place to ride your bike. It has a great flat ride on a car free cyclepath round the lake and big days in the mountains. A popular stop for the Tour de France, it is often described as the Venice of the Alps, or the gateway to the Alps. It is also only a short 45 minute transfer from Geneva airport, making it ideal for a weekend getaway.

Col de Aravais Loop - This is a big day in the saddle with over 2500m of elevation gain. You start by taking in the Col de Forclawz, an ever steepening climb to a parapont launch site, with a great panoramic view of the lake. A fast descent ensures, and then jump on the cycle path all the way down the valley to Ugine. Here you swing left and begin climbing. Just when you think that the top must be in site, you plateau and then there is a final 8km climb to the top of the Col de Aravais. Grab a coke with the cows, before descending down a few km's, taking a sharp left and climbing to the top of the Col de Fry, before a monster descent to the valley and the valley road back to Annecy.

Montee de Semnoz Route - A nice half day loop for an experienced mountain rider or a day ride for those new to the mountains.

Start by picking up the cycle path out of Annecy round the lake and then swing off in Saint-Jorioz to start your climb to the Col de Leschaux. Drop downa lovely little descent into the valeey on the other side beofre climbing back to the the Col de Leschaux from the other side. You then swing left on to the climb of Semnoz itself. It has a fairly stable 7% gradient to the climb for 9km, before the climb ramps up for the last 3km once you exit the woods and enter the ski-station area. A fast descent, down the spine of the mountain, back down to Annecy is your reward.
