Le Bourg-D'Oisans

This town sits at the base of one of the most iconic mountains in all of bike racing. Alpe d'Huez looms large over this little town and in the summer it is a cycling hot spot. There are a couple of bike shops and a decent supermarket in the town, and along with the smaller villages nearby of Allemond and Freney d'Oisans, Bourg-d'Oisans makes an ideal base for a cycle holiday.

Where to Ride?

Other than the three ways to ride up Alpe d'Huezthe Croix de Fer, Glandon and Galibier are all rideable from here. There are also the lesser-known climbs of the Col d'Ornon, Col d'Auris and Villard-Notre Dam and the excellent 'balcony road' to explore.

Where to Stay?

We always prefer to stay in Allemond a smaller village just 6km or so from Bourg d'Oisans. Contact us for our personal recommendations.

Where to Eat?

Our favourite place to grab a bite to eat is the restaurant La Romanche, who do a great goats cheese salad and tartiflette or La Falaise Restaurant Pizzeria for a very large pizza from their wood-fired oven.

What to do, other than ride?

You can go rafting, climbing and walking in the immediate vacinity. Briançon, Grenoble and the Écrins National park are all close:

Briançon not only has a rich history of art, politics and culture, but also benefits from an average of 300 days of sunshine per year. The town had several of its buildings classified by the UNESCO as World Heritage Sites in 2008.

Grenoble has plenty of attractions including the 19th century hilltop fortification Bastille, museums on Grenoble and its archaelogical discoveries, as well as the Musee Dauphinois which displays the history of Alpine life.

Écrins National Park is one of the ten French national parks. It is located to the south of the valley that runs from Grenoble to Briançon.

What climb not to miss?

Don't miss climbing Alpe D'Huez via La Sarenne
