Cycling in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain

Nestled between the Mountians and the coast, Oviedo is the capital of Asturias. It's proximity to the coast means that it has cool summers and warm winters. It also means it is wetter than the rest of Spain, so it is worth packing a rain coat if you visit!

Where to Ride?

Head South and East from the city in to the mountains and hills. The roads are small but well kept and the riding wild, green and idylic.

Where to Stay?

We would recomend staying in the Hotel Enclave Las Caldas. Located 8km from Oviedo near to the University, you have easy access to the countryside. The hotel is very bike friendly, with a secure bike room, and inhouse bike ambassador. With the ability to do biomechanic and strength tests on-site and 1700km of routes from the door step, it is easy to see why we recomend the Hotel Enclave.

Where to Eat?

We really like eating in Piperu Tapas y Pinchos. The restaurant is good value for money and you can choose from lots of small local plates while drinking local cider.

What to do, other than ride?

  • Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias - Situated within three buildings: the Palacio de Velarde, the House of Oviedo-Portal, and the House of Solís-Carbajal.
  • La Foncalada - A fountain of potable water located outside the city walls of Oviedo; it was built by King Alfonso III in the 9th century.
  • Archaeological Museum of Asturias - Housed in the 16th century Benedictine monastery of Saint Vicente in Oviedo.
  • Museo Fernando Alonso - Museum dedicated to the racing career of Fernando Alonso, with his cars, helmets, trophies & more. He is an avid cyclist himself!

What Climb not to miss?

Don't miss climbing the Alto de Angliru  and try to take on it's ramps of 24%!

What you didn't know about Oviedo?

Oviedo is home to Fernando Alonso.
